Never Thought She Was Pretty 💄

She had long hair, strong hair but it was coiled up into an Afro. A crown that rested upon her head.

She cut it off, to wear wigs that resembled her long hair, strong hair that was coiled up into an Afro, a crown that once rested upon her head.

She had brown skin, clear skin, melanated and overcoming. Skin that had been passed down as an heirloom to her through blood, war, revolution, slavery, prejudice and injustice.

She ordered Mac make-up, full coverage. To cover her brown skin, melanated and overcoming. The heirloom that had been passed down to her through blood, war, revolution, slavery, prejudice and injustice.

She allowed society to make her feel she is only beautiful when she wears the mask. I never thought….I mean….She never thought she was pretty anyway.

"Some dope black girl writes" is inspired by the everyday life of a melanated, educated, sophisticated young woman living in an era where she is too young to remember slavery, segregation or "White's Only" locations but now old enough to be terrified at what may come again. Are our people strong enough this time to LIVE not just survive?
